PLANT A TREE

When I was a child we had this great maple on our front lawn and I would jump up and grab the lowest branch with my hands then swing my feet around the branch and pull myself up so I was sitting comfortably on the limb. Afterwards, I would rise to my feet and start my ascend. I would climb, climb, climb, climb, climb until the branches were too thin for my childhood frame and there I would sit, in my favorite maple, for hours on end.

What an incredibly peaceful feeling I had in my tree. I was safe in "my" tree. I'd sit on a high, high branch and observe the beauty of the world around me. I'd soak in hours of fresh air that so many kids of today simply have no desire for.

I played in my tree for years until one day my father decided that the lowest branch was hanging too far out over our driveway. He came out with his saw. A long red-handled tree saw. I stood there numb as I watched him decide exactly where to make his cut. First he place the saw on the branch very close to the driveway. I breathed a sigh of relief. Then in a quick change of heart he started sawing the branch off at the trunk. I wanted to yell, "Dad, Stop!" but I couldn't find the words in time. It was too late. The saw had begun it's destruction of my haven. The other branches were just too high for me to reach from the ground. It was at that moment that I lost the ability to climb my favorite tree.

For a while I felt misplaced. I wandered around my yard searching for alternatives. I found one small, interesting looking tree in my back yard with a branch that bent over to the right. I could sit on that branch which overlooked the river but it wasn't the type I could climb, climb, climb, climb, climb, like my favorite maple. Sometimes I sat on that bent branch but it just didn't feel the same. That little tree was too far from the security of my home and it felt dark and second rate to my glorious maple.

I never did find another tree quite like my favorite tree. But I'll keep searching and when I find it you'll know by looking straight up to find me high about the rooftops.

In the meantime, I'll continue to support the PLANT A TREE USA organization whose goal is to plant 18 billion trees to help counter the effects of global warming (see Special Report - Global Warming, New York Times Magazine, April 3, 2006) and ensure kids of the future have trees to climb!

Plant a Tree in Honor or in Memory of a special person in your life (or maybe in honor of a special tree like mine). It's a GREAT Mother's Day Gift.

What Exactly Does the Term ORGANIC Food Mean?

When it comes to food more and more people are selecting products labeled as ORGANIC. I wonder, how many people really know what they're getting?

First, let's take a look at what the term ORGANIC means?

To most of us the term ORGANIC implies no use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizer, antibiotics, and hormone. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.

So what exactly is ORGANIC?

The Webster Dictionary definition states:

1. Of or having to do with a bodily organ.
2. Inhernet; inborn
3. Systematically arranged
4. Designating or of any chemical compound containing carbon
5. Of, like, or derived from living organisms

Next, let's take a peek at our governments view.

The pureness of ORGANIC products vary. The actual amount of organic matter within the product varies by the ORGANIC phrasing found on the product label.

When a product states it's "Made with ORGANIC ingredients" this statement guarentees that ONLY 70% of the ingredients are ORGANIC.

If a product is labeled 100% ORGANIC you can be more confident that you are getting a fully ORGANIC product.

But what about the rest of the products labeled ORGANIC? Here's an eye opener... Our government requires ORGANIC products to have "at least" 95% of the ingredients produced organically. That means the remaining 5% might contain pesticides - LEGALLY. Just think about it, you can be eating a bowl of ORGANIC cereal and 5% of that product may have been grown with pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. That's probably not what you had in mind when you purchased the cereal.

At Whole Food Farmacy we have a different philosophy on ORGANIC products. We actually prefer to use the term "ORGONIC". "ORGONIC" means life energy and without question our Wholefood Farmacy food products are snacks and meals you can enjoy with peace of mind. All of our products are handcrafted with ingredients that are free from artificial and synthetic preservatives, synthetic additives, articial flavors, artificial colors and fragrances, synthetic chemicals, hydrogenated oils or trans fats and are GMO and animal cruelty free.

THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL "CONFIRMS" YOUR HEALTH IS AT RISK!

Recent reports from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and other agencies, confirm what most of us know from just going through the day. Americans are fat and getting fatter. Further studies have brought us to the conclusions that we’re not only fatter, we’re sicker as a result of being fatter. Some states are fatter than others, but NO STATE IN THE USA IS FIT. Scary!

Here's what U.S. Surgeon General Vice Admiral Richard H Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS had to say...

“As a society, we can no longer afford to make poor health choices such as being physically inactive and eating an unhealthy diet; these choices have led to a tremendous obesity epidemic. As policy makers and health professionals, we must embrace small steps toward coordinated policy and environmental changes that will help make Americans live longer, better, healthier lives.”
